English 9/Introduction to Literature – one and one-quarter credits
In ninth grade, students apply grammatical skills in writing composition based on reading both fiction and poetry. Figurative language with sound and rhythm patterns with poetry will be introduced and analyzed within poems. Setting, characterization, plot, inference, point of view, and tone of various fictional readings will be explored as to how they work together to create a theme. Introduction to research paper. Grammar and vocabulary skills practiced. Oral presentations. Summer reading requirements. Honors level is also offered.
English 10/ World Literature – one and one-quarter credits
Tenth grade English involves reading literature of the world’s cultures, from ancient to contemporary times, based on universal themes. Student will study vocabulary, grammar and composition. Research paper, oral presentations, summer reading required. Separate honors section offered.
English 11/American Literature – one and one-quarter credits
Students in eleventh grade English read selections by major authors in major movements of American literature. Students are acquainted with contemporary historical and intellectual events and learn to recognize themes and symbols from American life in their reading. Essays and examinations will demonstrate student’s knowledge of literary styles and movements. Vocabulary, composition, a research paper, and oral presentations will be required. Summer reading is also required. Honors level is also offered.
English 12/British Literature – one and one-quarter credits
Twelfth grade English includes a detailed study of British authors from the origins of the English language to the Restoration era. Students study how historical, social, and intellectual movements affected different literary periods. Essays and examinations will demonstrate student’s knowledge of literary styles and movements. Vocabulary, composition, a research paper, and oral presentations will be required. Summer reading is also required. Honors level is also offered.
