Elementary Social Studies
2nd & 3rd Grade Hands-on World Cultures
*This course will be taught in a two-year rotation. The alternate year will focus on the cultures of South America and Europe
Students will travel worldwide to explore diverse countries and cultures while learning geography. They will experience different cultures through various hands-on activities and games, try traditional foods, make native crafts, listen to ethnic music, and more.
Quarter 1: China, Japan, Thailand
Quarter 2: India, Antarctica, Australia, Morocco
Quarter 3: Russia, Israel, Egypt
Quarter 4: Tanzania, Kenya, and Ghana
4th & 5th Grade Local History/ Kid Congress:
*This course will be taught in a two-year rotation. The alternate year will focus on U.S. Geography and United States History.
This 4th and 5th Grade Social Studies course takes students on a year-long journey from local history to hands-on civic leadership. During the first two quarters, students explore the history, geography, and key figures of Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, gaining an understanding of how our local region shaped the nation. In the third quarter, students study civics, learning how the United States government functions at the federal, state, and local levels, including the Constitution, the three branches of government, and the lawmaking process. In the final quarter, students apply their knowledge through a Kids Congress simulation, where they establish a classroom government, draft and debate bills, and participate in the legislative process with the class serving as Congress and the teacher acting as President.
